California artist, Marilyn Rothman, believes that artists should paint what they know and love. Having grown up in Southern California, Marilyn naturally gravitates towards the simple beauty of nature. Marilyn is known for conveying personal, aesthetic emotion in her work. She invites the viewer to enjoy its content, but also to explore the textured surface of her brush work as she uses layers of paint to create a rich, often glowing surface. To create her subject matter she observes, combines and often invents nature's images. The final painting is a "calculated surprise" but the goal is always visual pleasure and communication with the viewer. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Marilyn focuses on light, texture and dimension. Using many layers of paint on her canvas, her landscapes become vibrant and dynamic interactions of color. Impasto palette knifing and varied brush strokes work to create a unique fingerprint of the intersection between impressionism and realism. In addition to painting, Marilyn holds a variety of degrees and has enjoyed three successful careers. She holds a BA from UCLA in Sociology and Psychology, as well as a Lifetime Credential in teaching. She worked in the classroom as an elementary school teacher and a reading specialist, later completing her MA in Educational Administration. Marilyn then used her accumulated knowledge and social intuition to help teachers and administrators find employment in independent and private schools throughout California. Marilyn's interest in art was constant, but her artistic talent became apparent as an adult, when she enrolled her young children in extracurricular art programs. She soon found herself experimenting with different artistic mediums alongside her son and daughter, fascinated by the process and its rewards. When she discovered her love of painting, it quickly became her passion. Marilyn currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and maintains close relationships with her two adult children. She paints everyday under the watchful eyes of her dog, Oliver. |
